PurpleSlog’s 5GW Working Definition 0.9 [UPDATED]

Sometimes what I write in a post or comment surprises me.

Here is a an updated 5GW working definition that just came out while writing a comment on arherring‘s “Laying the Foundations Part 4: The Fourth Wall” post:

5GW as secret deliberative manipulation of actors, networks, and or states to achieve a goal or set of goals across a combination of socio, economic, and political domains while attempting to avoid or minimize the action/reaction of 2GW, 3GW and 4GW powered actors, networks and/or states.

It is influenced heavily on Arherring’s earlier working definition:

Fifth Generation Warfare (5GW): An emergent theory of warfare premised upon manipulation of multiple economic, political, social and military forces in multiple domains to effect positional changes in systems and achieve a consilience of effects to leverage a specific goal or set of circumstances. (Arherring 1/12/07)
[...and...]
Consilient effect: a ‘jumping together’ of effects by the linking of effects across domains in order to create a pattern for action. (Arherring 1/12/07)

Hmm…his is still better.

Udpate: Per Arherrings suggestion:

5GW as secret deliberative manipulation of actors, networks, states or any 2GW/3GW/4GW forces to achieve a goal or set of goals across a combination of socio, economic, and political domains while attempting to avoid or minimize the retaliatory offensive or defensive actions/reactions of 2GW, 3GW and 4GW powered actors, networks and/or states.

  1. I don’t know. I like yours quite a bit too. Only change I would make would be to point out that pehaps you might want to leave room for the possibility of influencing 2GW, 3GW and 4GWers to -over-react.

  2. How about:

5GW as secret deliberative manipulation of actors, networks, states or any 2GW/3GW/4GW forces to achieve a goal or set of goals across a combination of socio, economic, and political domains while attempting to avoid or minimize the retaliatory offensive or defensive actions/reactions of 2GW, 3GW and 4GW powered actors, networks and/or states.

  3. Creating too much definition is like building a box around a garden. If that box is made as a greenhouse, it might help the garden flourish but will still limit its growth. If that box is cardboard, it’ll kill the garden.

That said, I think that your updated working definition is pretty good, in that it’ll serve as a guide for further exploration. It is “working” — perhaps your box is the ecosystem or the basic elements and laws of physics, or part of those.

  4. Incidentally, I wonder if we should create a new post on D5GW titled with, “Some Working Definitions of 5GW”, to aggregate the various takes on the subject. Something simple, listing them and dating them and linking the originals, but without much further commentary in the post itself.

Maybe we should solicit more working definitions, heh: “What does ‘5GW’ mean to you?”

  5. That’s a good idea Curtis. I have some other post I need to actually make too.

  6. I’ve never claimed ownership of the Working Definition. By all means gather everyone’s together. I think most of the best thinking I’ve done on 5GW has been in response to the suggestions for revision in the commentary of my working definition posts. I’ve made it sort of a hobby to try and find ‘other definitions’ and ‘other names’ for 5GW out there being designed in paralel.

Perhaps a good topic for the Blorum?

  7. [...] I read through the book with those posts in mind, along with looking for 5GW ideas and xGW ideas in [...]

  8. [...] I just made a point of adding “institution” (per this idea) to my older definition. [...]
