PurpleSlog’s 5GW Working Definition 0.91 [Update]

Here is a minor update to my working description of Fifth Generation Warfare (5GW):

5GW is the secret deliberative manipulation of actors, networks,
institutions, states or any 2GW/3GW/4GW forces to achieve a goal or set of goals across a combination of socio, economic, and political domains while attempting to avoid or minimize the retaliatory offensive or defensive actions/reactions of 2GW, 3GW and 4GW powered actors, networks, institutions, and/or states.

I just made a point of adding “institution” (per this idea) to my older definition.

So could a viral ad campaign be 5GW under this description? They’re setting goals in multiple social domains, and avoiding detection at all costs, since being caught seeding an “organic” word-of-mouth campaign is horrible PR and a serious blow for the company running the campaign.

Yes, it could. I call this the Memetic Engineering Style of 5GW.

Not all viral ad campaigns are 5GW of course. For simple business purposes the stakes are less.

For purposes of war/security, Secrecy of a Memetic Engineering 5GW is paramount because the stakes are higher. Being exposed means the target is now aware of the 5GWer and can present a better defense, plus the 5GWer now faces retaliation (kinetic and non-kinetic) . The 5GWer won’t be good at defense…this is most likely the end of them as an effective 5GW force (and maybe the end of them period).
