    Model Constitution

My Mom emailed me this joke:

(2 ) Our Constitution “They keep talking about drafting a Constitution for Iraq. Why don’t we just give them ours? It was written by a lot of really smart guys, and it’s worked for over 200 years. And, we’re not using it anymore.”

Funniness (or lack of funniness) of the joke aside, I always thought it would be a good idea for the US to draft a model constitution based on the US Constitution that could be easily used by and extended by other nations.

    1. I agree.

I’ve often tried putting the Iraq realities into terms of our Constitutional structure to see how such a thing could be accomplished. The U.S. has a state system that is fairly unique, given its size and natural resource distribution; plus, the religious and ethnic splits in Iraq would factor into the equation — especially now that those divisions have been exacerbated.

    2. I wasn’t thinking Iraq per say. Most countries seem to default to a symbolic-president/powerfull-prime minister/parliment form of government.

I would like a model american-style (heck…bring in Swiss influence too) federal constitution with separate-and-mostly-equal-branches-of-government. be made available.
